Rapper Buckshot, known for his music with the hip-hop groups Black Moon and Boot Camp Clik, is speaking out after he was recently attacked in Brooklyn.
Buckshot, 49, a Brooklyn native born Kenyatta Blake, was assaulted in Flatbush Oct. 28 and hospitalized for his injuries.
The rapper, who grew up in Crown Heights and co-founded the record label Duck Down Music, shared a statement on Instagram after being released from the hospital.
“Recently, I was the victim of a violent assault involving multiple individuals armed with weapons, including handguns,” he said. “This attack stems from ongoing disputes over my property, where I am the rightful owner but have faced issues with unauthorized occupants who escalated the situation to violence.”
“As someone who’s been an entertainer and part of this community for over 30 years, I am deeply disturbed that such an incident could happen in New York — a city I love and call home,” Buckshot continued. “Violence like this has no place here, and I’m calling on everyone to come together to make New York safer and better for all of us.”
He said he’s recovering from his injuries and that the attack is under investigation, with his attorneys involved.
“We are committed to seeing justice served, and I ask for your patience and support as the legal process unfolds,” Buckshot said.
He thanked fans for their support and well wishes.
“Let’s put an end to violence and help rebuild a stronger, safer New York.”
Black Moon, made up of rappers Buckshot and 5ft and producer DJ Evil Dee, released the hit song “Who Got da Props?” written and performed by Buckshot, in 1992. The single made the Billboard Hot 100.
The group’s acclaimed debut album, “Enta da Stage,” came out in 1993, with songs including “I Got Cha Opin,” which also charted.
Boot Camp Clik was founded in 1993 as a Brooklyn hip-hop supergroup. Buckshot joined duos Heltah Skeltah and Smif-N-Wessun and the trio O.G.C. in the group.
Buckshot released four albums with Black Moon, the most recent being “Rise of Da Moon” in 2019, and four with Boot Camp Clik.
His solo album, “The BDI Thug,” debuted in 1999. He’s also released three albums with 9th Wonder (”Chemistry,” “The Formula” and “The Solution”), one with KRS-One (”Survival Skills, 2009) and another with P-Money (”Backpack Travels,” 2014).
