WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Election Day was one week ago, but it is still not over.
The Maui County Clerk said there are 1,069 ballot signatures that still need to be verified.
“If you didn’t sign the back of your ballot, or if your signatures don’t match what we have on file, we’ve let you know,” said Moana Lutey. “We’ve been calling people, emailing.”
It is a process called curing and Lutey said it happens every election.
“It’s very important to get your vote counted,” said Kelly King, candidate for South Maui Council.
King, who had previously held the South Maui Council seat, is currently behind incumbent Tom Cook by 117 votes.
She believes those uncounted votes could be her opportunity to pull ahead.
“The third printout showed me well ahead in the whole district that I represent,” King said. “So, you know, if a lot of those votes came from South Maui, that could put me over the top.”
Cook said he is confident the results will keep him in the lead.
“117 votes are a lot closer than I would have hoped for. I don’t take anything for granted. I’m grateful for all the votes that I got, and I’m going to work hard for people to see my ability to implement housing and infrastructure for our local community,” said Cook.
Voters can check the status of their ballots by visiting Hawaii.BallotTrax.net. If it is not verified, call the Maui Clerk’s Election’s Division at (808) 270-7749.
It must be verified by 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 13th for it to be counted.
